| Job Description: | An exciting opportunity exists for a suitably qualified person with expertise in dynamical downscaling to work on problems affecting the Australia-Pacific region using atmospheric modelling tools such as RAMS, OLAM, WRF and MM5. Initially, the work will focus on dynamical downscaling of the climate system to provide projected changes in extreme rainfall and tropical cyclone events for Phase 3 of the Indian Ocean Climate Initiative (IOCI 3).
The successful applicant will develop and use regional climate modelling techniques and high resolution atmospheric modelling to downscale reanalysis data for benchmarking purposes prior to downscaling control and changed climate simulations. The longer-term strategic direction for the position is to develop the capability to simulate severe weather extremes for climate change applications using the ACCESS model as part of a regional climate modelling capability being developed by CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology. To be successful in this role, you will have: A PhD or equivalent qualification in atmospheric science or a related field. Demonstrated experience in research related to climate and numerical climate simulation. Demonstrated ability to develop innovative approaches to analysis of complex datasets from climate observations or climate models and their physical interpretation. Experience with UNIX-based computers, well-developed programming skills in modern Fortran or similar languages, statistical analysis software, and data visualisation software. In return you will be rewarded with working with a leading government organisation which is engaged in world class scientific research projects, career development and professional support.
